Welcome to Amsterdam

Over recent years, it has been with pleasure that Traveleyes has travelled with students from International Schools to Romania, Morocco, Granada, Prague and Vienna, who have acted as sighted guides for their vision impaired fellow travellers. Following the overwhelming success of these trips, we are proud to announce a new trip to Amsterdam, open to vision impaired and sighted travellers who will be accompanied by our International School students. Our vision impaired customers will enjoy the holiday at the same discounted price that’s paid by the sighted travellers. Sighted travellers will have a lighter than usual guiding role on this trip since most of the guiding will be done by our students.

Traveleyes invites you to explore Amsterdam, one of Europe’s greatest cities and famed for the historic canal system which comprises a full quarter of its area. This creative and vibrant city is a delight to visit at any time of the year, having much to offer in a diversity of cultural treasures, all attractively linked by fine cobbled streets, tree-lined canal sides, countless coffee shops and excellent restaurants. We will also get a chance to escape the city and experience traditional Dutch life at the Zaanse Schans Museum where we’ll learn about clog-making, cheese-making and explore a row of traditional windmills.

Tour Highlights

  • Walking tour of the beautiful city of Amsterdam
  • A chance to relax on a leisurely canal cruise
  • Tasting traditional Dutch cheese and learning how to make Dutch clogs

Below is the itinerary for the holiday. Please click each day for more information.

Thursday 21st March

Today we’ll meet in Amsterdam where we’ll have our welcome briefing and sighted guide training before heading into Amsterdam for a typical Dutch dinner together.

We’ll then embark on a short walking tour of this unique, historic and picturesque city centre.

Dinner included. Overnight in Amsterdam.

Friday 22nd March

This morning, we’ll journey by tram back into Amsterdam where we’ll board a boat for a cruise around the spider’s web of canals that weave around cobbled streets lined by tall narrow Dutch houses.

We’ll then enjoy a walk around Amsterdam with a stop for lunch before heading to our next activity in The Plantage. Once here, we’ll enter the Resistance Museum which tells the tale of Nazi occupation in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands during World War II, we’ll learn about the effects this had on the Dutch people and the resistance movement opposed to the occupation.

Following this, we’ll enjoy some free time before journeying back to our accommodation.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Amsterdam.

Saturday 23rd March

Today we take a full day excursion to experience traditional Dutch culture with a visit to Zaanse Schanes. This historic residential area on the River Zaanse shows us what life was like in 18th and 19th century Holland. There’s a chance to witness and assist in the carving of traditional Dutch wooden clogs, possibly the most familiar feature of Netherland national costume.  The attraction also includes artisan cheese makers and crafters who make traditional Delft Blue ware as well as a row of iconic windmills.

We’ll also visit the towns of Volendam and Marken, both places being very popular with visitors due to the retention of attractive original features and a traditional atmosphere. Old Dutch fishing boats are still in everyday use in this region and the wearing of traditional Dutch costume is not uncommon, all of which adds an appealing authenticity and colour to local life.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Amsterdam.

Sunday 24th March

This morning we’ll check out and begin our journeys home.

Breakfast included.

Single Supplement: £99.

The sighted students from the International School of Brussels will all be English speakers aged between 14 and 18. Students will be divided into groups of 2 and act as sighted guides for 1 visually impaired traveller.
