Welcome to Austria

Austria is a destination like no other, with a unique and beautiful contrast between city life and landscapes reminiscent of that of a fairy-tale. Starting in Innsbruck, we’ll embark on an 8-day trip taking us across the stunning and dramatic scenery, as we hike from town to town and take in the refreshing mountain air. On our journey we’ll cross through deep valleys surrounded by lush and verdant meadows, travel on railways deep through the hills, and cross through villages and hamlets.

Thursday 27th August

Today we replace the city for the mountains, as we begin our trekking adventure! Leaving Innsbruck behind us, we set out towards the river inn. We’ll follow a promenade until we reach a train station where we’ll hop on for a short transfer to our next stage in the walk. Arriving into Hermann-Buhl-Platz square, we’ll enjoy some incredible views over Innsbruck, Patscherkofel mountain and the Serles and Nockspitze mountains! We’ll start an ascent towards the Umbruggler Alm mountain hut, where we can take some time to rest, relax and take in the outstanding beauty we are surrounded by. As we continue our trek, we’ll start a to descend towards the chapel Hottinger Bild. The last leg of this walk involves a steep, uneven track, so we’ll make our way slowly across the terrain before arriving into Kranebitten, where we’ll catch a bus to Obsteig for the night.

Ascent 350 metres, descent 600 metres, distance 10,5 kilometres

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Obsteig.

Friday 28th August

Our walk begins directly from our hotel this morning. We’ll travel along a forest road before following a path alongside the Sturlach river, where we’ll be joined by the sounds of rushing water and the scent of conifer’s in the air. Gradually the path becomes steeper, leaving the river banks behind us, eventually reaching the banners of the Lehnberghaus. We’ll have some time here to rest after our hike and to enjoy the views over the Mieminger mountains. Soon, we’ll continue to an observation platform, with rolling views across the Mieminger platue, the valley Inntal and the Wetterstein Mountain Range. We’ll then return to the path and follow a forest road back to our hotel.

Saturday 29th August

After a short bus ride this morning, we’ll hike along the paths of Pirchkogel mountain towards the Feldringalm hut. We’ll follow a forest road, on a ascent, through a conifer forest before reaching open Alpine meadows. We’ll continue on a steep track towards the Pirchkogel Mountain, before arriving at the summit cross Grunwaslkreuz where we’ll witness the magnificent view across the Kuhtai’s Mountain Range. Sunday 30th August

Following the forest road alongside the Zirmbach stream we travel towards the charming mountain village Gries. After the initial walk along the forest road, we’ll then travel through the forest on an idyllic hiking trail before reaching Gries. This village has fewer that 600 habitants and has held on to the farming countryside traditions that have given way across much of Austria to the modern world. Carrying on, we’ll pass flowers, meadows and old farming houses. After a few hours, we’ll arrive into St Quinn where we’ll find a small pilgrimage church and panoramic views across the mountain range. After a further short hike, we’ll arrive into Oberperfuss and travel to our hotel for the night.

En route, we’ll travel across a forest road that is used as a sledging trail during the winter and then through the Gotzner Graben rift. We’ll arrive at a mountain hut and take some time to rest before continuing towards the valley before arriving at Mutters village centre, where we’ll then travel to our base in Igls tonight.

We’ll also hike the Zirbenweg path, a famous panoramic nature trail between Glungezer and the Patscherkofel.
