Welcome to Barbados

Join Traveleyes on our first adventure to the Caribbean paradise island of Barbados. The island is famed for its powdery white sand beaches and the clear blue waters of the Caribbean that swarm with tropical fish and majestic giant sea turtles. The island is so much more than just beachfront bliss; particularly infectious is the vibrant Bajan culture which is infused with bright colour, namely the blues and yellows of the flag that flies all over the island. The people are proud of their nation, and extremely willing to share this pride with hearty, well-spiced food and a relaxed way of life suffused with rich musical tradition. Chow down on the national dish of fried flying fish and wash it down with a local rum, as the setting pink sun casts shadows of palm trees over an endless sea. We shall discover the world-renowned local rum production, a sugar cane farm, pottery workshops, as well as the turbulent past of Bridgetown and the legacy of slavery.

Wednesday 5th December

We shall spend the morning relaxing and enjoying the beautiful sunshine. This afternoon we shall embark by bus for an afternoon tour to discover some fascinating aspects of Bajan culture. First, we shall visit Medford Craft World for the opportunity to buy local wares and learn about how they are made. Next, we shall enjoy a sugar cane experience on one of the island’s well-known farms. The farming of sugar cane is intimately woven into the history of Barbados; sugar remains a huge economic asset with the island still renowned for premium fine quality sugar. However, there is also a darkness in its story; the sugar cane plantations of Barbados played an important role in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade due to the numerous plantations here. Our guide will provide many stories about the island and bring them to life in a sensory way as we transfer back to our hotel for our evening meal.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Hastings.

Thursday 6th December

Today, why not venture into Hastings and enjoy lunch at a local café or grill? A trip to Barbados would not be complete without trying some of the sumptuous local food. Cou-cou and fried flying fish with spicy gravy is the national dish. Another delectable option is “Pudding and Souse”, a dish of pickled pork with spicy sweet potatoes.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Hastings.

Friday 7th December

Today we shall make the short journey to Bridgetown, Barbados’ capital and only city. Barbados has been inhabited since the 13th century by the Kalinago people and prior to this by the Amerindians. The Spanish came to the island in the 15th century before the British claimed it for King James I. The city has an incredible story to tell, much of this hailing from its days as the primary hub for the sugar trade of the British Empire. Barbados was established as an independent Commonwealth country in 1966 and has since enjoyed an astronomical rise in popularity as a tourist destination. The city is also home to some fantastic indoor markets, where local crafts, materials and clothes can be negotiated over. A shuttle bus runs every day from our hotel into the town so there will be ample opportunity to return and explore further.

This evening you may wish to get taxis to the Oistin’s Friday night fish fry. On a Friday night, Oistin’s comes alive and is a real humdrum of activity, with local fish being served up quick as music suffuses the scene, with locals and tourists flocking to relax and enjoy a drink and a dance.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Hastings.

Saturday 8th December

Enjoy a day relaxing on the beach, you may wish to enjoy some water sports or take the opportunity to take to the water on a catamaran cruise.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Hastings.

Sunday 9th December

Today we shall venture out to discover some more of the island on another half-day tour. Our first stop will be the Military Garrison and then we shall visit the Highland Pottery Studio to get hands on. Finally, we shall journey to Barbados’ rugged and wind-battered East Coast. Sparsely populated, but with stunningly secluded beaches hammered by big white rolling waves, the East Coast is well worth a visit, particularly if you are a geology enthusiast. A stop on one of these delightful beaches concludes our tour before returning to the hotel.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Hastings.

Monday 10th December

Enjoy a day at leisure to explore the island at your own pace.

This evening you will have the chance to join the Manager’s Rum Punch Party hosted by hotel staff giving you a great chance to meet other guests and locals while enjoying a tipple as the sun sets over the shimmering clear blue water. Sunsets in Barbados are like no other with the sky awash with pinks, oranges, reds and yellows as the hot sun falls below the horizon.

Tuesday 11th December

Today we visit the distillery for one of the world’s oldest and most respected brands of rum, Mount Gay. The distillery first started producing rum around 300 years ago when Sir John Gay, a local businessman, helped his friend, ironically named John Sober to turn the distillery into a centre for rum-making. We shall tour their distillery, learning the process involved and of the island’s connection to rum. We shall then sample some of the creatively flavoured rums at the colourful distillery tasting rooms. Tonight, we shall enjoy one last dinner together as the sun sets on our adventure in the Caribbean
