Wednesday 22nd April

Upon arrival in San Jose this afternoon we’ll transfer to our hotel in this historic capital of Costa Rica.

Overnight in San Jose.

Thursday 23rd April

Following breakfast, we’ll leave San Jose behind for the tropical lowlands of Costa Rica. Upon arrival in Sarapiqui we’ll enjoy an adventurous and scenic river rafting experience in the Sarapiqui River, one of the cleanest and most pristine rivers in the country.

Our adventure begins from the community of La Virgen de Sarapiqui and follows the waters through impressive rainforest that towers over the banks of the river. On either side of us will be clear pools and a wide range of flora and fauna. The section of the river we’ll raft down is excellent for people who want to participate in rafting for the first time and want an exciting rafting experience, however, it is important to consider your own physical condition before taking part.

The whole section of our river rafting experience is 7 miles long and normally takes about 2 and a half hours to complete. It will include a brief stop with a fruit buffet and time to swim. You’ll require river shoes or sandals with straps, a swimsuit, light clothes (that will get wet!), towel and dry clothes to change into.

We’ll tuck into an included lunch together before continuing our journey to La Fortuna, the closest town to Arenal Volcano. Once here, we’ll check into our new hotel amid lush gardens and a spectacular view of the volcano.

Breakfast and lunch included. Overnight in Arenal.

Friday 24th April

Today we’ll explore the secrets that lie hidden in the depths of a rainforest river canyon whilst rappelling down waterfalls. Upon arrival, we’ll have a safety talk and gear up before taking a short trek to the first waterfall where our adventure begins. On the tour there are four rappels available ranging from 18 metres to 50 metres in height, all guaranteed to get your heart pumping! Following our exhilarating rainforest adventure, we’ll tuck into an included lunch before heading back to our hotel.

You’ll require comfortable clothes, trousers, an extra change of clothes, walking shoes, insect repellent and a swim suit.

This afternoon you’ll have the option to visit hot springs and relax in thermal waters. Geologically, these thermal natural springs are 97% rain-based and 3% magma-based. There are three thermal springs that naturally surface and flow in the property at different temperatures (37°C/99°F to 108°F/41°C). There are two main branches of a thermal river that flow through the gardens and one cold river spring that flows down from the rainforest into one fresh water cascade. After you have felt all your worries and stress disappear we’ll tuck into dinner that is included as part of this optional tour.

Breakfast and lunch included. Overnight in Arenal.

Saturday 25th April

Enjoy breakfast and then depart from the lowlands of northern Costa Rica for the mountains of Monteverde, home of Costa Rica’s cloud forest. On the way, we’ll stop by Arenal Lake and board a pontoon boat for a journey to Rio Chiquito, a little town on the other side of the lake that is home to many migratory birds.

Once at Rio Chiquito, we’ll stretch our legs before continuing our journey to Monteverde, the last 30 minutes of this journey will be on rustic roads so expect a few bumpy moments.

Upon arrival we’ll settle into our hotel and enjoy lunch at leisure. Following this, we’ll rendezvous for a trapiche (sugar cane) and coffee tour. We’ll visit a farm that grows bananas, arracacha, macadamia nuts, oranges, sugar cane, coffee and breeds pond fish. We’ll get to taste the freshly cut sugar cane and learn about the coffee production process. Following this, we’ll board oxcarts and journey to a mill to witness the extraction of the sugar cane’s juice and learn the artisanal way to process the sugar cane into different products. We’ll explore an exhibit featuring some traditional Costa Rican artefacts such as a wood stove and marimba musical instruments before eating some arracacha and sampling some freshly made drinks made from the sugarcane.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Monteverde.

Sunday 26th April

Today we’ll head to the Sky Adventure Park and commence the sky walk. This is a walking tour that combines nature trails and hanging bridges with lengths of up to 300 metres that soars above the canopy of Monteverde’s cloud forest.

Afterwards, we’ll ride on the Sky Tram, an open-air gondola that takes us from the ground to the mountain heights. Once at the top, we’ll disembark onto an observation platform that offers views of the forest and the Gulf of Nicoya.

We won’t be boarding the gondola to return to the ground however, as we now commence our Sky Trek (zip lining!). We’ll glide down on a zip line system stretching across canyons and treetops, admiring the magnificent natural landscape whilst enjoying an exhilarating ride. There are ten zip line cables, ranging in height from 40 metres to 100 metres and in length from 100 metres to 750 metres.

You’ll need to bring hiking shoes, comfortable clothes, jacket or raincoat and insect repellent.

This afternoon we’ll continue our adventure with a visit to a bat jungle for a tour about these enigmatic creatures. The centre resembles the cloud forest at night so the bats are free to fly at their leisure. There are also a series of interactive sculptures and a recording system so that you can hear the live sounds of the bats as they use their echolocation.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Monteverde.

Monday 27th April

Leave the mountains of Monteverde Behind as we journey to the Pacific Coast. Our base for this evening will be located near the world-famous Carara National Park, a sprawling sanctuary protecting the rainforest and its diverse inhabitants.

The park boasts some of the tallest rainforest trees in Costa Rica, like the kapok and wild cashew trees that can grow up to 60 metres high, as well as the magnificent umbrella-shaped Guanacaste tree, Costa Rica’s national tree. There are several hiking trails that make their way through Carara National Park, perfect for exploring the natural landscape across flat walking trails at your leisure.

Alternatively, you may wish to join a horseback riding tour through the rainforest. Beginning at Herradura base, we’ll mount our steeds and ride through farms, past glistening waterfalls and ascend through the rainforest. Amid the sounds of toucans, scarlet macaws and white faced monkeys we’ll arrive at a waterfall and pool area where we’ll tuck into fresh fruit and have time to enjoy the waterfalls and natural slides.

You’ll need to bring long trousers, water shoes or strap on sandals, swimwear and a towel.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Jaco.

Tuesday 28th April

Following breakfast we’ll depart Jaco and journey further south. Along the way, we’ll visit the famous Manuel Antonio National Park where we’ll walk along a flat trail that loops through the park for approximately 2 miles. Our nature tour guide will point out the sloths, birds and reptiles who call this forest home. Along the way, we’ll stop at one of the beaches located within the park to bask on the sand and enjoy the smell and sound of the sea underneath palm trees.

This afternoon there will be ample time to enjoy one of the area’s amazing beaches, with deep blue waters and beautiful white sand beaches this is the perfect place for some R&R after an action packed few days.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Dominical.

Wednesday 29th April

Today we’ll embark on a surfing lesson for beginners. In this class, we’ll learn all the basics of surfing, starting with ocean knowledge, surfing etiquette, positioning on the board, how to paddle and how to stand up properly and ride a wave. The beach even has some natural fresh water pools close by so be sure to check them out! There will also be the opportunity to simply kick back and relax on the beach, watching the world go by whilst sipping on a refreshing coconut.

Following a morning riding the waves we’ll enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Dominical.
