Welcome to the Danube

Celebrate New Year in comfort this year, as we sail down the second largest river in Europe, which crosses 10 of Europe’s most sought out countries. Take in stunning destinations and the beauty of the vast rolling scenery along the Danube. Spend New Year’s Eve dining aboard the Fidelio and celebrate into the early hours of the morning with a night of festivities, surrounded by your Traveleyes companions!

Our journey begins in the elegant capital of Vienna, where we will discover the grandeur of this Imperial City. We’ll make our way from the splendid streets of Vienna to Melk, famed for its abbey, a beautiful example of classic Baroque architecture. Our travels continue to the quaint and picturesque town of Durnstein, the perfect location for an amble through quintessential Austria. As New Year’s Eve grows closer, we make our way to Budapest to observe as this historic city transforms for a night of celebration. Our own New Year’s celebrations will take place on board our ship, The Fidelio, where we will welcome in the New Year together!

Our journey will then take us to Esztergom, a city filled with tradition and home to the largest Basilica in Central Europe, a breath-taking sight not to be missed. Our final full day sees us at the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava. An eclectic mix of old and modern, architecture and greenery, Bratislava promises to capture your curiosity and leave a lasting impression. We then return to Vienna, where we make our journey back home and begin the new year!

Thursday 27th December

Today we shall depart for Vienna to begin our New Year’s Cruise! We will arrive into Vienna and make our way to the cruise port, where we will spend the night docked.

Overnight in Vienna.

Friday 28th December

Today we head to the infamous and majestic Schonbrunn Palace, a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Here we will embark on a special sensory tour, in which we will be allowed to touch certain objects around the palace, such as ornately carved doors, smooth ceramic stoves and interior decorations. Schonbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to grand marble rooms, intricate and delicate artwork and breathtaking decor.

After our tour you will have free time in Vienna to explore the Imperial City, take in the impressive architecture to be found on every twist and turn and feel the rich history on offer. Once you have had ample time meandering through the city, we will return to the ship for the evening.

Alternatively you may wish to return to the ship for lunch and continue your afternoon at leisure following this.

Saturday 29th December

This morning we arrive in the quintessential town of Melk, best known for its abbey, which stands proud atop a hill overlooking the river. This picturesque and grand monastery houses stunning gardens and intricate architecture throughout. Adorned with gold, this Baroque building boasts exquisite interiors, from a vast and impressive library to a luxurious marble hall. Meander through the abbey and take in the grandeur of this unspoilt piece of history and make sure to pause for the breath taking views overlooking the town. We will return to the ship for lunch and transfer to Durnstein.

This afternoon is yours to explore Durnstein, one of the most beautiful villages in Austria, with streets adorned with quaint and colourful houses, cobbled streets and a striking Augustinian monastery. Make your way to the infamous castle ruins, known for the imprisonment of Richard the Lionheart, for your daily dose of culture or simply spend your time meandering through this delightfully quaint Austrian dwelling.

Sunday 30th December

Today we spend a day cruising along the Danube. Use this time for some much needed recuperation after the busy and hectic Christmas period. Take advantage of the onboard facilities with a refreshing dip in the onboard pool or make you way to the spa for some rejuvenating treatments. We will arrive later in the evening into Budapest where we will dock for the night, chose to have your dinner on the ship or venture inland to find some traditional Hungarian cuisine.

Monday 31st December

Today we embark on a walking tour of this magnificent city. On this tour we will take in some of Budapest’s most established attractions, such as the infamous Chain Bridge, the first connect between Buda and Pest and the second bridge over the Danube. We shall also visit the grand buildings of Parliament and saunter through the esteemed Szabadsag square. We will make our way through these ancient streets and see the city transform as the day goes on, preparing for the evening festivities. Marvel at the intricate architecture to be found across the city. Our tour will come to an end outside of the renowned Szechenyi Baths. From here you can meander through the streets or pay a visit to the baths and soak in the medicinal spring waters, believed to hold therapeutic powers.

Following on from the tour, you may wish to return to the ship for lunch or continue your exploration of this magnificent city.

This evening, aboard the ship we will enjoy a New Year’s Dinner and celebrate the excitement and promise of the upcoming festivities. After dinner, celebrate into the night with your travel companions and make memories that you will carry with you into 2019!

Tuesday 1st January Esztergom

This morning we arrive into Esztergom. Today is yours to enjoy this historic Hungarian city, teeming with history and culture. Why not visit the impressive basilica, the largest in all of Central Europe? This imposing piece of architecture, created with bold red marble, towers over the town and juxtaposes the gentle charm of the old streets below. This afternoon, make your way back to the ship for an evening at sea, as we move on to our next destination.

Wednesday 2nd January

Today we arrive in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. A unique blend of old and new, Bratislava offers an exciting and intriguing history. We will embark on a walking tour through this fascinating city and learn all of Bratislava’s historical highlights. Our guide will take us to such landmarks as the Primate’s Palace, which stands out for its stunning pale and pink exterior and St Martin’s Cathedral, a timeless classic of European architecture.  As we meander through the streets, you will get a feel of the rich history of Bratislava and its unique charm. Following from this you will have some free time to explore this fascinating city further or return to the ship for your lunch.

Thursday 3rd January

Today we arrive back into Vienna and begin our journey home.
