Welcome To Egypt

Embark on a journey of discovery to Luxor and board a luxurious cruise ship for an unforgettable voyage through Upper Egypt on the magnificent Nile. The mysterious spirit of the Ancient Egyptians is entrenched in every nook and cranny of the temples, statues and necropoleis peppered along both sides of the river. Our tour of this beguiling land includes visits to Luxor, Karnak, Philae and Kom Ombo as well as a felucca sailing around Kitchener’s Island – a lush green haven created by Earl Kitchener during his time as Proconsul of Egypt. On board the ship we’ll be treated like royalty with decadent meals, afternoon teas and traditional belly dancing shows. Following our sailing, we’ll stay in the extraordinary city of Luxor for a day of further exploration and a chance to unwind by the Nile.

Our adventure continues a short flight north in Lower Egypt and the evocative metropolis of Cairo. Wasting no time, we’ll head straight to the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Spinx; at 4500 years old, these monuments carry an unparalleled sense of scale, age and mysticism. We’ll stay overnight in Cairo before journeying home the next day.

Saturday 7th September

Enjoy a leisurely morning in Luxor before boarding the Sonesta Moon Goddess before lunch. You’ll have plenty of time to get settled before lunch on board and then it’s time for our first tour of the sailing – a visit to Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. The word Karnak means fortified village and is a mix of temples, chapels, and pylons and is the second most visited historical site after the Pyramids of Giza.

We’ll then continue to Luxor Temple which was built around 1400BC and is still used as a place of worship in the present day. Late afternoon we’ll be back on board in time for afternoon tea and then the evening entertainment will start with a belly dancing show before dinner.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight on Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Sunday 8th September

Take a leisurely morning on board Moon Goddess as we sail to Edfu. Soak up the sun while swimming in the pool, enjoy a cocktail on the sun deck, or simply relax as you sail down the River Nile. This evening, we’ll enjoy a Captain’s Welcome Cocktail Party so wear your glad rags and get ready to celebrate your Egyptian adventure.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight on Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Monday 9th September

This morning we’ll disembark for our tour of Kom Ombo Temple. This unique double temple is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god and Horus, the falcon-headed god. Our guide will take us around each temple so we can learn about the myth behind these two gods and the stories surrounding them.

Back on board Moon Goddess, we’ll sail to Aswan late afternoon before enjoying dinner and a Galabeya party. Dress to impress for this party! Everyone will be wearing a Galabeya – a traditional Egyptian gown – so pick out your favourite for a fun night ahead!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight on Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Tuesday 10th September

It’s time to relax this morning as you have some free time to enjoy being on board. This afternoon, we’re going to board traditional little feluccas that are powered by iconic angled sails only found on the Nile. While on board, we’ll sail to Kitchener’s Island – a little green paradise in the middle of the River Nile. This is where the Aswan Botanical Garden is located and serves as a little haven when the Egyptian sun is at its hottest. The next stop of the day is Aga Khan, a pink granite building that is the resting place of Aga Khan III who died in 1957. Back on board Moon Goddess, we’ll enjoy afternoon tea before a Nubian Folkloric show and then dinner on board.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight on Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Wednesday 11th September

It’s an early start today as straight after breakfast, we head to the High Dam – an engineering marvel in Egypt that protects the River Nile and its surrounding embankments from floods and droughts. It also helps with electricity production, employment and agricultural production.

Next up are the granite quarries where stone was hewn and transported 900km north to Giza for the construction of the famous pyramids. We’ll then stop at the Temple of Philae which is one of Nubia’s most important sites as this is the ancient pilgrimage centre for Isis and has the marks from Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods. We’ll be back on board for lunch as we’ll be sailing to Kom Ombo and Edfu for the rest of the day.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight on Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Thursday 12th September

This morning we’ll dock in Edfu and visit the Temple of Edfu, which is also known as the Temple of Horus. This immaculately preserved temple was uncovered in the 1860’s from a sand burial and is famous for two gigantic pylons that are covered in depictions of battle scenes – standing at 118 feet high, the pylons ominously guard the temple entrance.

The rest of the day is spent on board so sit back, relax, and enjoy afternoon tea, the warm sun, and music in the lounge as we start our journey back to Luxor.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight on Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Friday 13th September

Our guide today will take us to the West Bank where we’ll see the Valley of The Kings and Hatsheput. The Valley of the Kings is a collection of elaborate tombs which prepared humans and pharaohs for the next world – Tutankhamun was buried here with dazzling treasures and between 1539 and 1075 BC the valley became a royal burial ground. We’ll then learn about Hatsheput, the longest reigning female pharaoh in Egypt – she ruled for 20 years before her step son, Thutmose III came into power.

When we’re back on board, we’ll enjoy our last evening together on board Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight on Sonesta Moon Goddess.

Saturday 14th September

Today we’ll leave the Sonesta Moon Goddess in the morning before enjoying the day in Luxor. You may wish to explore some of the temples we didn’t see at the beginning of the trip such as the Tomb of Ramses and the Tombs of Sennofer and Rekhmire. If you’ve had your fill of temples, enjoy some buffalo milk ice cream or take a felucca to Banana Island and relax under the sun or seek shade under swaying palm trees.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Luxor.

Sunday 15th September

This morning we’ll leave Luxor for the capital of Egypt, Cairo. From the airport we’ll venture straight to the legendary Pyramids of Giza. For hundreds of years, these structures have been one of Egypt’s biggest mysteries and they simply have to experienced in person.
