Below is the itinerary for the holiday. Please click each day for more information.

Wednesday 11th December

Arrive in Helsinki and transfer to our city centre hotel in the early afternoon. The rest of the day will be at leisure exploring the city. On Helsinki’s charming streets you’ll find cutting-edge centres for art and modern design, then turn a corner and you’ll discover elegant art-nouveau cafes, shops, and noteworthy museums. This is a city of the old and new, balancing traditional heritage with a proudly progressive outlook.

Overnight in Helsinki.

Thursday 12th December

Waking up in Helsinki we’ll have a leisurely breakfast before meeting our guide for a walking tour of Helsinki. Helsinki is a compact city and we shall visit many highlights including the neo-classical Senate Square, Lutheran and Orthodox cathedrals and Market Square. We may have the opportunity to visit the emotive Rock Church before exploring some of Helsinki’s modern delights including the Kaisa (Helsinki University library), the sculptures in Esplanadi Park and the Chapel of Silence.

The rest of the afternoon can be enjoyed further exploring the main attractions of this vibrant city or perhaps you would like to try some Nordic cuisine that has recently become internationally renowned.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Helsinki.

Friday 13th December

This morning we’ll embark on a short flight north to Kuusamo where we’ll then transfer to the resort of Ruka, our winter wonderland for the next few days. It is then time to gear up and collect our outdoor winter outfits so we stay warm and snug during our adventure.

The rest of the afternoon can be enjoyed exploring our cosy resort before our upcoming days of activity.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Ruka.

Saturday 14th December

We’ll meet our guide and transfer to a reindeer farm today where we’ll meet a local reindeer herder who will share his stories of herding this iconic animal around Lapland. As part of this festive experience the reindeer will take us for a short ride in a traditional sledge before we gather round a cosy fire for a snack to hear stories.

No winter adventure is complete without visiting energetic huskies, and this afternoon we’ll be doing just that!  These black and white dogs also have distinctive pale blue eyes and a thick double coat, perfectly suited to arctic conditions. They will be eager to go running so following a short safety briefing we’ll mount our sledges in twos and commence a 5km ride through magical white wilderness.

We’ll then learn more about the husky dogs on the farm and enjoy a small snack before returning to Ruka.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Ruka.

Sunday 15th December

Today is free for you to enjoy as you wish. You may want to try snowshoeing, or go cross-country skiing in the winter landscape. These are optional excursions which can be booked through Traveleyes. Alternatively, soak up the cosy ambience of Ruka with good food and warm drinks!

This evening we’ll hope for a clear starry night and for a vivid appearance of the Northern Lights as we have our starlight sledge ride. We’ll meet our guide in Ruka who’ll drive snowmobiles that pull our sledges behind for a journey deep into the enchanting forests and groves of this magical winter wonderland. Along the way our group will stop by a cosy fire for a snack and time to absorb the unique ambience of Finland’s refreshing north and, if we are lucky, the Northern Lights!

Breakfast included. Overnight in Ruka.

Monday 16th December

With plenty of lakes and ponds, the region of Kuusamo is a paradise for fishers so today we’ll try our hand at ice fishing, known as pilkki in Finnish. The jiggers will be transported to the fishing place on a snowmobile sledge where we’ll learn the secrets of ice fishing, and learn how to check the nets under the ice. Accompanied by some traditional hot juice we’ll see who will catch the biggest fish.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Ruka.

Tuesday 17th December

Today we transfer back to Kuusamo for our journey home via Helsinki.

Breakfast included.
