Winter Activities in Finland

Sunday 4th January  

On arrival at Kuusama airport, we’ll transfer to the picturesque region of Kylmäluoma and our base over the next 8 days. We’ll check into our accommodation which will be cosy wooden cabins where we’ll meet our local guide who will brief us about the activities and the week ahead. We’ll also gear up, collecting any winter clothing rentals, so we stay warm and snug during our adventures.

Monday 5th January

To start the week, we’ll strap on our skis to learn one of the most popular wintertime hobbies in Finland, cross-country skiing. Once we’ve mastered the technique, we’ll be free to glide over frozen lakes and through snow-covered pine forests.   

After a fun-filled morning on the skis, we’ll head back to our base for a hearty, well earned, lunch, before returning to the snow for another loop of the forest and a chance to enjoy the freedom of the skis once again.

Tuesday 6th January

After breakfast we’ll head out into the snow for an exciting day of igloo building and the chance to sleep in your own icy creation! With shovels and spades we’ll pile up the snow to then hollow out afterwards to create your potential shelter for the night… if you’re feeling adventurous! With warm sleeping bags and a thick mattress, it’s up to you if you’re brave enough to spend the night in your new abode, experiencing the wonder of staying warm in your “cool” hotel no matter how cold it is outside. 

With plenty of lakes and ponds, the region of Kuusamo is a paradise for fishers so this afternoon we’ll try our hand at ice fishing on the frozen lake just by our cabin. We will drill holes in the ice and learn the secrets of ice fishing… and see who will catch the biggest fish! Patience is definitely needed for this activity but the opportunity to be still and enjoy the silence and beauty of the surrounding wintry nature is one not to be missed.

Wednesday 7th January

Today is at leisure for you to enjoy your choice of activity.  Maybe you would like to revisit something you have already tried – snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or even ice fishing again if you didn’t make a catch the first time! Or you might choose to book a snowmobile safari to explore the beauty of the landscape even further.

Thursday 8th January

Taking our packed lunch with us, we’ll set off today on our snowshoeing tour. Starting at our cabins, we’ll follow a trail through the beautiful snow-covered pine, spruce and birch forests that surround us. We’ll stop halfway to enjoy a picnic lunch around an open fire, before following the trail back to our cabins and, perhaps, take advantage of our private sauna before dinner.

Friday 9th January

After breakfast we will take around a one-hour drive to a local reindeer farm. Here we’ll meet a local reindeer herder who will share all manner of stories about this iconic animal, as well as get the chance to feed the reindeer.  

No winter adventure is complete without husky sledding, so we’ll take a short transfer to the husky kennels for this highlight of the week. The black and white husky dogs have distinctive pale blue eyes and a thick double coat, perfectly suited to arctic conditions and they will be eager to go running! After learning about the life and training of the huskies, and receiving a short sled-driving lesson, we’ll mount our sledges in pairs and then it’s off into the magical white wilderness. With two people sharing a sled, and 4-6 dogs pulling, you’ll feel the fresh breeze on your face as you drive through snow-white forests and across frozen lakes. 

(NB – if the group is over 10 people then this activity will be split into two shifts with the second group staying at the kennels)

Saturday 10th January

What has been the highlight of your week? Today is a chance for you to revisit some of the activities you’ve already taken part in, or the option to enjoy an exciting snowmobile safari.

Sunday 11th January

After breakfast we’ll say goodbye to the beautiful snowy wilderness of north-eastern Finland and transfer back to Kuusamo for our flight home.
