Welcome to the French Riviera

Located on a truly delightful coastline with blue Mediterranean waters lapping sensuously onto beautiful beaches, it’s easy to understand why Nice became known as the heart of the legendary French Cote d’Azur. Unlike many other seaports however, Nice has much more to offer than fortunate geography. Its beautiful Old Town is a spellbinding labyrinth of narrow medieval streets where colourful and irresistibly French traditions have survived for centuries. Nice will be our base for exploration around the French Riviera with the exclusive Principality of Monaco being just a short train journey away. Other highlights include the glamorous coastal towns of Cannes, Villefranche and Antibes. Further inland you may wish to explore Grasse, Saint-Paul-de-Vence or venture to the idyllic hilltop town of Eze.

Wednesday 8th August

Upon arrival in Nice we’ll transfer to our hotel, leaving the rest of the day free to relax and settle into this beautiful city on the majestic Cote d’Azur.

Overnight in Nice.

Thursday 9th August

Today provides the opportunity to familiarise ourselves with Nice on a pleasant guided tour of the city.  Being quite small, Nice is compact and easy to negotiate on foot, making it easy to explore the many quaint and narrow lanes which periodically open out onto thriving market squares where local purveyors proudly display a fulsome selection of fresh delicacies and examples of traditional crafts.

This afternoon will be free to enjoy at our own individual pace. Time is always well spent here exploring the hauntingly atmospheric narrow backwaters of ‘Vieux Nice’ as well as the grander streets, some of which are decoratively planted with miniature orange trees and others with exotic palms. One senses a perpetually warm invitation to amble, to unwind in one of the many alluring cafes and simply enjoy the wonderful ambience. Some may choose to take a leisurely stroll along the long coastal promenade to soak up the sun and be serenaded by the fresh sound of the waves as they break gently onto idyllic sands.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Nice.

Friday 10th August

Nice is a city with many differing strengths. There’s a multitude of museums and other places of historic importance to explore. In contrast, it’s also well endowed with some of the most exclusive and stylish fashion boutiques to be found anywhere.  Among interesting topographical landmarks are Castle Hill, a beautiful park which surrounds the old castle ruins. This maze of natural greenery is full of delightful surprises such as old mosaics, semi-tropical flowers, attractive cafes and a waterfall.  In passing through the park to the viewing platforms at the top of the site requires the visitor must prepare for a spellbinding vista of the cityscape, bordered by the harbour on one side and graceful mountains on the other.

Alternatively, you may wish to board a train and journey west to the glitzy beach front town of Cannes where you’ll find glamourous couture, gourmet cuisine and maybe even a celebrity lounging on a yacht. In the same direction is the delightful port town of Antibes, a favourite spot for both famous artists and the rich and famous.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Nice.

Saturday 11th August

Today we’ll board a train and head through the hills to the microstate of Monaco. Measuring just one kilometre long by one and a half kilometres wide, this may be the world’s second-smallest country (The Vatican is smaller), but what is lacks in size it certainly makes up for in attitude, glamour and glitz. This is a coastal jewel which nurtures its own exclusive world of yachts, palm trees, lavishness, luxury and leisure.

Upon arrival, we’ll embark on a walking tour of the many highlights of this tiny country. Highlights include the Carabiniers du Prince executing the Changing of the Guard at exactly 11.55am in the Place du Palais, walking on the famous Grand Prix de Monaco, promenading in the shadow of luxurious yachts and seeing the famous Casino of Monte Carlo.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Nice.

Sunday 12th August

Today is free to spend at will, relaxing on the beach or by the pool and taking an occasional dip whenever the sun’s rays have done their rejuvenation work upon body and soul almost too well.

Another option would be to treat yourself to that most delectable of optional excursions: our Gourmet’s Walking Tour! This fabulous feature invites us to (almost literally) ‘eat our way around Nice’! By sampling from a wide range of the local delicacies and traditional dishes we’ll be learning all about the culinary art and associated history of the area. This indulgence offers one of the very best ways to become familiar with the irresistible tastes and aromas offered by ‘cuisine Nicois’.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Nice.

Monday 13th August

Today is free to enjoy the city of Nice at your leisure. The food and flower market vendors that usually occupy the Cours Saleya area of Nice are swapped for a special antique market on Mondays offering another kind of magic as pre-revolutionary silverware is displayed side-by-side to antique Chanel contour. Why not explore the market this morning alongside a pastry and espresso from a tempting café.

Alternatively, you may wish to explore another part of the French Riviera. The hilltop town of Eze is a short drive away and is a rabbit warren of medieval streets. There is also the inland walled town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a charming settlement that is occupied by dozens of artists workshops and galleries showcasing original artwork for high-end clientele. Just to the east of Nice is the charming little seaside town of Villefranche, regarded as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Easily accessible by train, tonight will be the perfect opportunity to enjoy the evening in Villefranche and relax over a leisurely dinner by the sea.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Nice.

Tuesday 14th August

Today raises the most tantalizing decision of this Cote d’Azure experience: How best to spend our last full day in Nice? Perhaps this is the perfect moment to return once more to that delicious little cafe you found by chance earlier during our stay. Alternatively, your choice may be to return to the lookout post, high on Castle Hill.  This is certainly a good time to enjoy leisurely browsing for some meaningful momentos of this fabulous part of France. Some may choose to visit one of the many art galleries and museums which are situated in and around Nice. One of these is the Musée Matisse. Housed in a beautifully renovated Genoese villa, this museum tells the revealing story of the celebrated 19th/20th century French painter Henri Matisse whose expressive use of vivid colour to define form was to have a transforming influence upon much subsequent western art. Matisse lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954. Here we’re presented not only with a collection of his works but we also gain extra insights through the display of many of his own personal effects.

One particular optional excursion today provides the chance to enter the exclusive world of the French perfumier. Here we offer of a visit to a local perfumery which includes the chance to take part in a perfume making workshop. France is world renowned for its fine perfumes and this visit will explain many of the delightfully fragrant reasons for this. Here’s a rare chance for you to express your very own personality… by creating your very own perfume!

Breakfast included. Overnight in Nice.

Wednesday 15th August

Today we return to the airport for our international departure.
