Welcome to the Great Wall

Fancy a challenge? Then strap up your boots and join us as we head to Beijing and take on the Great Wall of China charity challenge trek!

We’ll arrive in Beijing and journey the short distance to the monumental Great Wall of China for 5 days of trekking along the hills and ramparts that compose this man-made wonder of the world. Our route will take us along both restored and rustic sections of the Great Wall as we follow the wall up ascents and down descents surrounded by gorgeous mountain ranges and traditional Chinese countryside.

This Great Wall of China trek is an open charity challenge that you can fundraise towards and support a charity of your choice. Half of the sponsorship target covers the cost of the challenge, whilst the other half of the sponsorship target is kept by your chosen charity to support their good causes.

To join this trek, you have the option to fundraise towards a sponsorship target, self-pay or a flexible combination of self paying and fundraising towards a lower sponsorship target. You can find further information on these payment options below the itinerary. You’ll pay a registration fee of £400 and airport taxes of £150 to confirm your place on the challenge before choosing your preferred payment option. If you do not intend to fly with the group from London then you’ll pay different prices which are detailed below in the payment options section.

Monday 4th May

This morning we’ll depart from Beijing and drive to our starting point on the Great Wall of China to begin our 5 days of trekking.

We’ll begin hiking on the restored section of Badaling Great Wall until we reach an unrestored part of Shixiaguan Great Wall, which literally translates to Stone Gorge Pass Great Wall.

Our journey will cover 8km and should take about 5 hours. Our elevation will begin at 580 metres, rising as high as 1200 metres and as low as 600 metres.

Following our trek, we’ll check into our guesthouse accommodation and enjoy a traditional cooked dinner before relaxing for the rest of the evening.

Tuesday 5th May

Begin the day with a trek from Huanghuacheng Great Wall, where several sections of the wall are actually under water, so is uniquely referred to by some locals as the Water Great Wall. After a short visit around the dam on Huanghuacheng Reservoir, we’ll hike westward to Xishuiyu Great Wall.

Along this route we’ll have panoramic views of lush valleys and endless mountain ranges.

The whole hike will be 9km and take 5 – 6 hours to complete. Our elevation will begin at 300 metres, rising to 460 metres and finishing at 300 metres.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Xishuiyu.

Wednesday 6th May

Following breakfast, head to the starting point at Jiankou Great Wall. For the first hour, we’ll climb up the mountain and get to the wall atop the mountain ridge. From here, explore Zhengbeilou Tower before following the ridge eastward along rugged sections of wall, crumbling towers and encroaching wilderness. Our walk will conclude in Mutianyu.

The hike will be 8km and take about 5 hours to complete. Our elevation will begin at 200 metres, rising to 900 metres before finishing at 300 metres.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Mutianyu.

Thursday 7th May

Today we will hike from Gubeikou to Jinshanling. Beginning on Gubeikou, we’ll learn about the important military sites of Chinese history as well as the important connection between Beijing and the plain of Inner Mongolia.

Today’s route includes beautiful trails that meander through farm fields and over hill ridges surrounded on all sides by gorgeous Chinese wilderness. Our route will then conclude in Jinshanling.

The hike will be 12km and take about 6-7 hours to complete. Our elevation will begin at 200 metres, rising to 400 metres, then descending to 300 metres before rising to 500 metres and finishing at 200 metres.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Jinshanling.

Friday 8th May

Begin a walk along Jinshanling Great Wall, a section that was first constructed during the early Ming Dynasty period (1368 – 1644). This section was initially constructed under the authority of the famou general, Xu Da, before being furter developed with additional defensive works by Qi Jiguang in 1567.

The hike will be 6km and take 4 hours to complete. Our elevation will begin at 200 metres, rising to 500 metres and concluding at 300 metres.

We’ll then drive back to Beijing to check into our city accommodation for time to refresh. This evening, we’ll embark on a guided walking tour through one of Beijing’s ansient hutong areas – these are traditional courtyard based residential streets of Beijing that are bustling hives of activity and local life.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Beijing.

Saturday 9th May

Today we’ll enjoy our treat for completing the Great Wall of China walking challenge!

We’ll embark on a city tour of Beijing, beginning with the Temple of Heaven to learn about the intricacies and symbolism of imperial Chinese architecture. We’ll also take time to understand and get a taste for Chinese park life.

Following lunch, we’ll explore Tiananmen Square for a further introduction into China’s imperial and more recent history. On one end of Tiananmen Square we’ll find the Forbidden City, a sprawling enclosed complex of multiple gates, walls and living quarters designed for China’s numerous imperial families. Every detail of this Forbidden City is layered in history, intrigue and deep meaning.

On the other side of the Forbidden City is Jingshan Park, a lush park full of Chinese flora and peppered with temples and follies. The park contains a hill which offers wonderful panoramic views of historic Beijing.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Beijing.

Sunday 10th May

As it is the final day of our challenge we must unfortunately depart from our hotel and transfer to the airport for our journey home.

Breakfast included.

We’ll walk for up to 7 or 8 hours on some days of this trek on mostly hilly walking tracks and sections of wall that can sometimes be rocky and uneven. The nature of walking along the Great Wall of China means there will be multiple inclines and declines during each day of walking.  The trek has been designed to be challenging but manageable for our Traveleyes group. A good level of fitness will be essential to participate.

If you are unsure if you are suitable for this trip, please contact the team in the office before booking!

“Fundraise for charitable causes whilst embarking on challenges across the world!”

Charity Challenges are where a group of travellers dedicate their own time and effort to raising money for charitable causes. By undertaking a demanding yet unforgettable challenge, you will inspire those around you to dig deep into their pockets to donate money to your challenge and the important charitable cause.

Our charity challenges are designed for sighted and visually impaired people who are raising money for a good cause. Sighted participants will act as sighted guides for their fellow visually impaired travellers. No more than 50% of the sponsorship target goes towards the cost of the trip, with all funds raised above this going towards the charitable cause!

“Push your own boundaries to help others”

Fundraising can be hard and it takes time to raise large amounts of money for charity. The challenge itself will be designed to push you, but is accessible for beginners. To get maximum enjoyment out of the challenge we recommend you train and keep active in preparation. Charities will not only benefit from the important funds that are raised, but from the publicity that the challenge will create.

This isn’t just another holiday, the treks will often be physically exerting and facilities may be basic at times.

We guarantee you’ll form lasting friendships and memories along the way, all whilst making important contributions to charitable causes!

This is an open charity challenge, so you can decide which charitable cause you would like to support.

Registration fee: £400

Airport Tax: £150

Sponsorship Target: £2700

This option means the challenge balance will be met through raising a minimum sponsorship for a charity of your choice.

If you choose this option, you will pay the registration fee and airport taxes to Traveleyes which will confirm your place on the challenge.

You will then commit to raising the minimum sponsorship amount of £2700.

We recommend you create a fundraising profile for this challenge on a fundraising website and inform the charity of your choice that you’re participating on a charity challenge for their cause.

You will then send your sponsorship money to your chosen charity, keeping a log of everything you’ve raised.

You should raise 80% of the minimum sponsorship target (£2160) no later than 12 weeks before departure (08/02/2020). Traveleyes will then collect the cost of the trek from your chosen charity which is never more than 50% of the sponsorship target. The charity will retain the remaining sponsorship money to support their good cause.

If you are still fundraising up until the challenge departs, you should send the remaining 20% of the sponsorship target to your chosen charity no later than 4 weeks following the end of the challenge.

If you would like to book on the trip as a land only traveller and arrange your own international travel arrangements you will pay a £400 registration fee, no airport taxes and a sponsorship target of £2000.

This option is best for travellers who are confident raising large sums of money for charitable causes.

Registration fee: £400

Airport Tax: £150

Self funded payment: £1350

This option means you will pay the cost of the challenge yourself and you won’t have a sponsorship target. Having covered the cost of the challenge yourself, you have the flexibility to fundraise as much as you can for a charity of your choice.

If you choose this option, you will pay Traveleyes the registration fee and airport taxes to confirm your place on the challenge.

You will then pay the remaining cost of the trip (£1350) 12 weeks before departure (08/02/2020).

You can fundraise as much as you like and donate this to your chosen charity without a set target. All the costs of the trip will be covered by yourself.

If you would like to book on the trip as a land only traveller and arrange your own international travel arrangements you will pay a £400 registration fee and then a self funded payment of £1000.

This option is good for travellers who wish to cover the cost of the trek themselves and do not want to fundraise with a specified target in mind.

Registration fee: £400

Airport Tax: £150

Self funded payment: £500

Sponsorship Target: £1700

This option means you will pay part of the cost of the challenge yourself and therefore fundraise towards a reduced sponsorship target.

Having covered part of the cost of the challenge yourself, you will then commit to raising reduced minimum sponsorship amount of £1700.

If you choose this option, you will pay Traveleyes the registration fee and airport taxes to confirm your place on the challenge.

You will then pay Traveleyes a self funded supplement of £500 12 weeks before departure (08/02/2020).

To reach your sponsorship target we recommend you create a fundraising profile for this challenge on a fundraising website and inform the charity of your choice that you’re participating on a charity challenge for their cause.

You will then send your sponsorship money to your chosen charity, keeping a log of everything you’ve raised.

You should raise 80% of the minimum sponsorship target (£1360) no later than 12 weeks before departure (08/02/2020).

If you would like to book on the trip as a land only traveller and arrange your own international travel arrangements you will pay a £400 registration fee, a £500 self funded supplement and then a sponsorship target of £1000.

This option is good for travellers who would like to fundraise towards a target for their chosen charity but may wish to have a lower sponsorship target and are willing to put some of their own money towards the cost of the trip.
