Welcome to Kenya

The landscape of Kenya is one of the most diverse and awe-inspiring in all of Africa and is truly the jewel in the continent’s crown. Our tour will incorporate all the must-see natural and cultural highlights. Starting in the bustling metropolis of Nairobi we visit famed heritage sites such as Giraffe Manor, the vibrant Carnivore Café and the place of origin for ‘’Out of Africa.’’  Departing urbanity, we journey into the shadow of towering snow-capped Mount Kenya to visit traditional Masai tribes and sample local coffee. We then walk headlong through the land-shaping Great Rift Valley into the vast array of wildlife that populates the fertile watering holes and vast savannas of Kenya’s south, as we twin big game drives with intimate walking safaris, to get us closer to nature than ever before. Our final destination is the celebrated Masai Mara, as we conclude with ‘’big five’’ safari drives and a chance to survey the immensity of the Mara from above, from the basket of a hot air balloon.

Monday 15th October

Today we depart the UK and begin our journey to East Africa.

Overnight in Nairobi.

Tuesday 16th October

After a morning relaxing in the hotel after our flight we will embark on an afternoon discovery of Nairobi. We shall first visit the Karen Blixen museum, this former farmhouse in the Ngong foothills rose to fame after the film ‘’Out of Africa’’, based on Blixen’s autobiography of the same name. We will also get a chance to visit the headquarters of the AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, known colloquially as the Giraffe Centre. The centre is famous for the hotel Giraffe manor but also its successful breeding programme and conservation of the Rothschild’s giraffe. Here, we can get up close and personal with one of nature’s more majestic beasts as we stand on an elevated platform to be at eye-level with these towering giants. We will even get a chance to feed the giraffes and maybe even the centre’s snuffling warthogs.

Tonight, we suggest dining in the Carnivore restaurant, one of Nairobi’s most revered night spots. On entry, you are greeted by a huge barbecue pit laden with real swords of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and game meats such as crocodile and ostrich. This spot has been frequented by visitors to the city and wealthy locals for nearly 25 years and enjoys near-iconic status.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Nairobi.

Wednesday 17th October

Kenya is a richly fertile land and we will visit some coffee and tea farms as we journey out of the city and into the stunning African bush. This afternoon after arriving at our lodge we can enjoy a nature walk through the bush before settling in for our first included dinner as the sun sets over Mount Kenya.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Mount Kenya.

Thursday 18th October

Today we journey on through the rift valley to the tranquil shores of Lake Elementaita. We shall begin with a truly immersive experience as we embark on a walking safari to get closer to nature than ever before while listening to the cacophony of sounds coming from the bush and the birdlife on the lake. Today is also a great chance to dive into Masai culture. Our local expert will take us through Masai villages where we can discover the traditional community way of life here. One particularly fascinating feature is the aromatic concoctions of herbs that are used by the locals to stay healthy.

This evening we shall enjoy a well-earned hearty dinner at our lodge before relaxing and enjoying a drink under the clear African sky.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Lake Elementaita.

Friday 19th October

In the late 80’s the Lake Nahuru National Park became Kenya’s first ever rhino sanctuary. The park is now particularly famous for its white rhinos and pink flamingos but is also home to black rhinos, lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes and waterbucks. After a full day’s exploration and nature spotting we return to our lodge.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Lake Elementaita.

Saturday 20th October

Today we board a boat to cross Lake Naivasha, the lake is a honeypot for nature, with ospreys, crakes and herons swooping overhead and hippos sleeping in the shallows and Columbus monkeys calling raucously.

Our boat will drop us off at Crescent Island, home to a marvellous variety of species and more animals per acre than any other Kenyan park. Herds of Wilderbeast, Zebra, Gazelle, Buffalo and Hippo all graze here. We can also ascend, to the top of a hill to survey a stunning 360-degree panoramic view across the lake and the plains teeming with life below. One particular site to watch out for is three generations of giraffe coming back to give birth.

We then make our way to Naivasha for our overnight.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Lake Naivasha.

Sunday 21st October

Hell’s Gate National Park’s spectacular scenery is moulded by geothermal power, its unique features include towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, stark rock towers, scrub-clad volcanoes and belching plumes of geothermal steam. Nature surrounds you from all angles and the wildlife here lives up to the setting. Hell’s Gate is the only national park where walking safaris are allowed and by the afternoon we certainly will have earnt some rest and relaxation by the lodge’s lakeside.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Lake Naivasha.

Monday 22nd October

Today we depart Naivasha through the Great Rift Valley and journey on to Masai Mara. Here we will enjoy a big game drive in one of Africa’s best game reserves, we may witness some of nature’s greatest phenomena – a solitary leopard in the high branches of the acacia tree, a male wildebeast sparring to attract females into their harem, a herd of elephants protecting their young from opportunistic predators.

This evening you have the choice of whether to relax or visit a traditional Masai Village to enjoy a traditional performance of music and dance in traditional regalia with bells attached to their feet, we will be entertained by talented performers, dancing to African rhythms and we may even be asked to join in!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in Masai Mara.

Tuesday 23rd October

This morning we begin with another big game drive and enjoy a final day in the sublime African bush. The Mara is the northern extension of the Serengeti and its rolling plains are home to hundreds of game together with predators that feed on them.

There is also the option to soar over the vast plains on a hot air balloon safari.

We shall enjoy one last overnight in Masai Mara before our return to civilisation.

We will also have a chance to do some souvenir shopping to finish the trip.

We enjoy one final evening soaking up the unique African atmosphere before our return.
