Welcome to Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one the Canary Islands most captivating residents, with an abundance of bizarre and unique natural phenomenon’s that make this one holiday spot you don’t want to miss off your wish list. Thanks to the architect Cesar Manrique, who worked with the government to create much of the style you see across the island, Lanzarote preserved its authenticity and has never given way to mass tourism. The towns are filled with whitewashed buildings, with no skyscrapers in sight, and are a stark contrast to the barren wilderness that coats much of the island. This beautiful sun-kissed island boasts a fantastic climate and inviting beaches lapped by sparkling blue sea, whilst further inland are national parks, dramatic mountains and other-worldly volcanic landscapes.

Staying in the popular area of Playa del Carmen, this is the perfect base to explore all that Lanzarote has to offer, with our hotel situated close to the beach and all dinners included, there is no better way to escape the cold winter days!

Wednesday 5th February

Today we depart the UK and travel to Lanzarote. Upon arrival we shall transfer to our hotel, where the rest of the day is free to settle into your surroundings. This evening we shall enjoy our first included dinner together.

Dinner included. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Thursday 6th February

For our first full day, there are no scheduled activities. This gives you ample time to really explore the area. Some of you may wish to just chill by the pool and soak up some of the winter sun, but for those who prefer sand to loungers, the beach is a close walk from the hotel! Alternatively, head into Playa del Carmen itself and meander the streets, soaking up the ambience of this vibrant island.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Friday 7th February

Today we shall embark on a tour across the island, stopping at some of Lanzarote’s most intriguing sights. Our first stop of the day takes us to Timanfaya National Park, the home of the island’s volcano that erupted in the 1700s and has since left the island coated in volcanic soil. The dramatic landscape here is not one to be missed, often likened to the surface of the moon, with its grey and rocky lands. Here we shall have a tour of the land, where we drive through the volcanoes and lava flows, accompanied by a narration explaining the history of the volcano with accompanying sound effects. We will also witness some geothermal experiments, demonstrating the four elements of science; water, earth, fire and air. Following from this, you will have the option to enjoy a camel ride if you wish to!

After the volcano we continue our exploration as we head to La Geria, this area of the island is renowned for its vineyards and production of mouthwatering wines! La Geria is an area of particular interest as despite the barren and volcanic lands, the farmers managed to cultivate the vine in a completely unique way. Here we will tour the vineyards before being able to sample some of the local delicacies!

We shall also visit El Cuervo, also known as ‘The Raven’s Volcano’, one of the island’s most dramatic looking craters. The landscape here is truly unique and unlike any other, with the ground made up of dark volcanic ash and spatterings of green shrubbery that have survived the harshest of conditions.

Later, we’ll return to our hotel for the rest of the day.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Saturday 8th February

Enjoy a day at leisure today. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the temperate weather. Lanzarote offers a little bit of everything, from sunbathing spots, to quirky architecture and bustling towns!

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Sunday 9th February

After breakfast today we venture to the western side of the island to Teguise, where a local market takes place every Sunday. Offering crafts, trinkets and produce, this market is not to be missed! After meandering through the stalls, there will be ample free time to explore the town. We’ll later return to the hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Monday 10th February

Today is a free day, you may wish to head out to explore another of the island’s quaint villages, or simply relax at the hotel. This is the final free day of the trip so make sure you visit any of the places you haven’t had chance to yet! You may wish to take a ferry over to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura, only 13 miles from our base, this Canary Island is worlds apart from the volcanic lands of Lanzarote.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Tuesday 11th February

Today we’ll learn about the important work of Cesar Manrique, a Spanish artist and architect who resided on the island and played an integral role in the unique design of Lanzarote.  Focused on preventing mass tourism from affecting the island’s heritage and culture, Cesar worked with the government, ultimately leading to the island becoming a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Today we will visit one of his works, starting at Jameos Del Agua, caves and tunnel forged from lava which is now a tropical garden and a place of true beauty and tranquillity.  We’ll also visit Mirador del Rio, one of the island’s most famous viewpoints. Located near the remains of an old military point, here is some of Cesar’s most stunning work. A building created to blend into the natural landscape, the interior is home to quirky and surprising details, beautiful glass windows and sculptures throughout. Mirador del Rio also provides spectacular views across to La Graciosa and out to sea.

We’ll later return to the hotel for the rest of the day.

Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Wednesday 12th February
