Welcome to The Loire Valley

Join Traveleyes on our first trip to the garden of France, the stunning Loire Valley. This luscious green region has been shaped by the Renaissance and enlightenment period to become a haven for French culture, architectural marvels and fine gastronomy. The fertile river valleys of the Loire have produced a network of vineyards making fine wine and nestled between them are charming, convivial towns filled with al fresco dining options and some of the finest chocolatiers and patisseries in all of France. Our base will be Orléans, a town devoted to Joan of Arc and her heroic tale of sacrifice. The region held huge strategic importance due to being sandwiched between the South and Paris. It became the playground for Kings, Queens and Dukes, as they constructed a string of extravagant and flamboyant homes and fortresses. We will explore some of the most decadent and fascinating châteaux including the former home of Leonardo Da Vinci constructed along this once new frontier.

Wednesday 22nd August

Today, we’re up bright and early for our first full day of exploration. We shall spend the morning getting to grips with this incredible medieval city, as our local guide gives us an orientation and shows us the very best of Orléans’ history and culture. On this tour, we will stroll past the cathedral of Saint-Croix, one of Orléans’ most striking buildings and the Place du Martroi – an homage to the French heroine and icon Joan of Arc. After a busy day we return to the hotel where you have the chance to relax and unwind; perhaps by enjoying a dip in the hotel pool!

Breakfast included. Overnight in Orléans.

Thursday 23rd August

Today we depart Orléans and journey into the rolling vineyard-dotted countryside of the Loire. We make our first visit to the famous Château de Blois made up of 564 rooms and 75 staircases, this home of former French Kings and Queens is a sight not to be missed. Our day experiencing the decadent lives of the upper echelons of the French Enlightenment-period society is further complemented by our arrival at the Chambord Castle – one of the world’s most recognisable castles due to its distinctive features of renaissance architecture with turrets and towers like something from a fairy tale. We then move on to a delicious wine and cookies tasting where we get to excite our taste buds with the rich flavours from the vineyards that cover the fertile Loire river valley.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Orléans.

Friday 24th August

Free day today to do as you please, whether that’s sitting by the pool, sampling local wines and cuisine in one of Orléans al-fresco dining spots or simply enjoying some well deserved R&R! If the itch for exploration takes you; Orléans is well served by a train and is a quick hop, skip and a jump into the heart of Paris.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Orléans.

Saturday 25th August

Today we have the chance to visit the celebrated château of Chenonceau. The castle is built hanging over the river with stunning archways supporting the decadent living quarters. The building dates back to medieval times but its current form dates to around 1513 and was constructed, by Thomas Bohier and predominantly by his wife, Catherine Briçonnet. The castle later fell into the hands of Queen Catherne de Medici, widow of Henry II. From Chenonceau, she managed the Kingdom of France from her study here, known as the Green Cabinet. We will have the chance to discover the castle’s long and colourful history as well as its gorgeous garden spanning an incredible 12000 metres squared!

We then head into the quaint town of Amboise where we have some free time to explore and grab lunch. After this we are given a guided tour of the final residence of Leonardo DaVinci, who died here at Clos Lucé in 1519 during the Renaissance era; the house has also been converted into a museum where some of his most influential machines are still on display.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Orléans.

Sunday 26th August

Another Free day for you to do as you please. We recommend taking advantage of all the regions delectable gastronomy, dining in a typical French restaurant and stocking up on fine wine from one of the regions many wine houses.  One way to explore the region further is to take to the river in a canoe to explore, alternatively, we recommend a day trip to the historical city of Tours to the west of Orléans.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Orléans.

Monday 27th August

Today, being the last leg of our French adventure. We start the day off by visiting the Château de Cheverny which as some of you may know featured heavily in the Adventures of Tintin books! Fans of the character will be treated to a marvellous Tintin museum holding some fascinating displays! This château is also home to a large kennel, full of howling hunting hounds and an extensive rifle collection! We all know a trip to France would not be complete without a wine tasting, so we have arranged a visit to a local winery to sample some of the best wines the region has to offer. We shall then have a delicious lunch on the estate before completing our day of gastronomic gluttony with an indulgent tasting at a splendid chocolatier.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Orléans.

Tuesday 28th August
