Welcome to Porto

The city of Porto sprawls down the hills surrounding the River Douro estuary. At the water’s edge, river cruise and fishing boats bob next to al fresco restaurants and warehouses stocked with cases and cases of famous Port wine. Porto has its own unique culture and pride, distinct from southern Portugal and based around its mercantile heritage and hardships. Dating from the Roman era, the city still has medieval structures built into steep rock cliffs and its 2000-year old centre is recognised by UNESCO. Regeneration has created a truly charming and beautiful city; a thriving blend of new and old stretching from the cobbled streets of the tightly packed centre to the sky-high terraces looking down on the docks, a perfect spot to sample fine wine in the home of Port.

Below is the itinerary for the holiday. Please click each day for more information.

Saturday 27th October

This evening we shall arrive into Porto and venture out for our first dinner together. Here we will have the chance to experience the friendly and welcoming locals and discover why they see Porto as its own nation. The residents of Porto are colloquially known as Tribeiros (‘tripe eaters’), a nickname that comes from a period in the 15th century during which the city forewent meat to support the capital and the fleet. The city has an excellent reputation for fine quality gastronomy with hearty portions. We recommend the salted codfish and seafood salads, as well as the traditional tripe-based dishes and the Francesinha (the little French lady, a delectable meat sandwich) and, of course, the decadent Portuguese pastries.

Overnight in Porto.

Sunday 28th October

Today we will explore Porto’s fascinating history, which dates all the way back to its Roman heritage as Portus Calle. The city’s steep and bustling streets are alive with activity and have been for centuries, from the Moors to the thriving Portuguese Empire and its colonial might in the age of discovery.

The afternoon is free for you to do some further exploring and perhaps take the time to enjoy a traditional Portuguese afternoon tea in the Liberdade square, or find a quiet terrace to look down over the immense River Douro estuary with the Dom Luis bridge towering in the background.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Porto.

Monday 29th October

We are up bright and early this morning for a relaxing cruise on the magnificent River Douro. An excellent opportunity to get a good look at both sides of this incredible city – Vila Nova de Gaia on one side and Porto city on the other. We will cruise serenely under the many impressive bridges that traverse the wide and majestic Douro. We shall then disembark on the other side of the estuary in Vila Nova de Gaia for an included wine tasting.

The afternoon will be spent at leisure exploring this varied but compact city.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Porto.

Tuesday 30th October

Today we shall dive into the world of Port wine. We shall visit a working wine cellar, an interactive museum, and a wine tasting workshop all whilst sampling some delicious Port wines. By the end of the day we will know exactly which wine we wish to take home and have learned all about the city and the wines’ intertwined history.

Breakfast included. Overnight in Porto.

Wednesday 31st October

Enjoy a morning at leisure before we make our departure.
