Monday 18th August
We’ll meet at The Peveril of The Peak, a country house full of character and our home for the next four nights. After checking in from 4pm onwards, we’ll get to know each other over a delicious cream tea before exploring the house and grounds.
Cream tea and dinner included. Overnight in The Peveril of the Peak.
Tuesday 19th August
Home to the Devonshire family for nearly five centuries, Chatsworth House is a Grade 1 listed building and stables, with a 105 acre garden, a 1822 acre park, a farmyard and one of Europe’s most significant private art collections! We’ll take a guided tactile tour of the house and then have time to wander the gardens and, weather permitting, enjoy our lunch in the sunshine.
This afternoon we’ll head to Poole’s Cavern, a two-million-year-old natural limestone cave and known as one of the finest show caves in England! Here we’ll take a guided tour around the limestone cavern with its underground passages and stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations. After our underground exploration we’ll return to our accommodation before dinner.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in The Peveril of the Peak.
Wednesday 20th August
Today we visit the quaint village of Eyam, famous for its role in the great plague of 1665-1666. The story tells of the brave villagers who quarantined themselves to stop the spread of the bubonic plague which had arrived at the village in a bundle of infected cloth. We’ll visit the Eyam Museum for a descriptive tour before exploring the village and finishing up at Eyam Hall to enjoy our lunch in the Courtyard.
Leaving Eyam we will spend our afternoon learning all about the industrial history of the area with a guided tour of the hydro-powered Masson Mills. Built by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1783, the mill harnessed the power of the River Derwent to revolutionise cotton production and was one of the earliest examples of the use of sustainable power in large industry.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in The Peveril of the Peak.
Thursday 21st August
After breakfast we continue our exploration of the peak District with a visit to the beautiful spa town of Buxton. We’ll take a guided tour of the town discovering its thermal waters, the history of its spa baths, the Pavillion Gardens and some sumptuous local delicacies such as Buxton pudding! After finding a local cafe or pub for lunch, we’ll have the afternoon at leisure to discover more of this wonderful town at our own pace.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight in The Peveril of the Peak.
Friday 22nd August
After breakfast, we bid farewell to one another after a pleasant few days together in the beautiful surroundings of Dovedale. Depart at leisure.
