Welcome to the Brecon
Nestled at the top of the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park in the heart of South Wales, the lively market town of Brecon is our base for this five-day UK getaway. Enjoy a tranquil canal cruise by narrowboat along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, which winds its way along the mountainside, navigating the traditional lock system to ascend above the River Usk. Step into Wales’ rich industrial past at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, where we’ll descend deep underground for a sensory and storytelling experience led by a former miner. Visit Hensol Castle, a striking 17th-century estate and home to a renowned Welsh gin distillery – complete with a guided tour and tasting. For our final day, we’ll head behind the scenes at The Royal Mint, a historic institution that has served the Crown for over 1,100 years, and where you’ll even have the chance to strike your very own coin!

After gearing up with helmet and headlamp, we’ll venture 300 feet underground with a former miner to gain real insight into the lives of those who worked in the coal industry. Above ground, a multimedia tour takes us through the historic Pithead Baths and colliery buildings.

Alternatively, take a relaxed stroll through the town’s cobbled streets, perhaps stopping for a coffee and a traditional Welsh cake.
After lunch, we’ll head out to Llancaiach Fawr Manor, one of the most atmospheric and reportedly haunted manor houses in Britain. On a guided tour led by voices from the past, we’ll learn about daily life here in the manor and maybe meet a few of the characters that “lived” there.
