CHECKLIST FOR TRAVELLERS
EHIC (European Health Insurance Card)
You should take with you an EHIC which has replaced the E111 form – as a UK resident, you’re entitled to free, or reduced state healthcare when you visit a European Union country (see UK Department of Health leaflet “HEALTH ADVICE FOR TRAVELLERS”, tel: 0800 555 7777). From 1 January 2006, E111s are no longer valid. You can apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) by phone (0845 606 2030) by post (with a pre-addressed envelope from the Post Office), or online (free of charge) at www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do. You will need your name, date of birth and National Insurance or NHS number.
Credit Cards
Check the expiry dates of your credit cards;
Make a separate note of their numbers and your credit card emergency number in case of theft or loss;
Whilst on holiday keep your credit cards separate and don’t carry all your cards with you – keep one in the hotel safe.
Insurance
Please ensure you have appropriate travel insurance – contact us for details of the policy we offer.
Money
Make sure you have enough to cover emergencies;
Take traveller’s cheques and keep a separate note of their numbers in case of theft or loss;
Don’t carry all your cash in one place and only carry as much as you need for the day (leave the rest in a safety deposit box if available);
If you need to take extra money/travellers cheques/valuables on an excursion use a concealed money belt.
Passports & Visas
You will require a valid passport for all overseas. If you do not have a passport, you should enquire at your main Post Office or visit www.ukpa.gov.uk at least three months before departure.
Check that your passport is still valid and make a note of its number, date and place of issue (in case of theft or loss);
Check whether you will need a visa – contact us if you are unsure;
Take another means of identification (preferably with a photograph);
Non-British passport holders should check the requirements for entry with the consulate of the country being visited before booking a holiday.
Keeping Healthy
If you’re travelling within the EU, get a new EHIC card for reduced or free emergency care;
Check what vaccinations you need with your GP at least six weeks before you travel;
Check if your medication is legal in the country you are visiting and pack it in your hand luggage;
If you are taking prescribed medication, take the prescription with you;
For further Travellers’ Health Advice visit www.nhs.uk/nhsengland/Healthcareabroad/pages/Healthcareabroad.aspx.
Drugs
Avoid any involvement with drugs – the penalties can be extremely severe;
Don’t carry parcels or luggage through customs for other people;
As above, carry a doctor’s prescription for any drugs you may need.
Theft
If any of your belongings are stolen abroad speak to your Tour Leader or local guide at once who will help you report it to the local police and obtain a statement about the loss; you will need one to claim against your insurance. If your credit card is lost/stolen, contact the emergency number or the bank to report it, if it is traveller’s cheques, contact the issuing agent.
